Is 7.9kW or 8kW solar system suitable for you?
Determining whether a 7.9kW/8kW solar system is suitable for your needs depends on several factors:
Energy consumption
Assess your average energy consumption, 7.9kW/8kW solar system typically generates around 26kW (it can reach up to 35kW under optimal conditions) of power 🔌 per hour under normal condition. If your energy usage aligns with this generation capacity, it might be suitable.
Will 7.9kW or 8kW solar system covert EV charging station?
A 7.9kW/8kW solar PV system generates an ample amount of electricity that can be utilized to fulfill your EV station requirements, as well as cater to other household electric items.
For this specific project, we have installed a GoodWe inverter and a Zappi EV station
Zappi EV station paired with an 8kW solar system
The Zappi EV station is designed to seamlessly integrate with an 8kW solar system, creating a harmonious synergy between your electric vehicle charging needs and renewable energy generation.
The Zappi EV station has a solar diversion feature that prioritizes the use of excess solar energy for charging your electric vehicle. It automatically diverts any surplus solar power that would otherwise be exported back to the grid, effectively reducing reliance on grid electricity and maximizing the use of clean, self-generated energy.
Roof space
Consider the available roof space for solar panels. A 7.9kW or 8kW solar PV system might require around 500-700 square feet of space, depending on panel efficiency and layout.
Location or region
The amount of sunlight available varies depending on your location. If you live in a region with abundant sunlight 🌞, a 7.9kW/8kW solar system may be more effective in generating electricity.
Budget
Evaluate your budget 💰 for solar installation. Larger systems tend to cost more upfront but may provide greater long-term savings on electricity bills.
Government incentives
Look into any government incentives or rebates that may be available for installing solar panels. These incentives can help reduce the upfront cost of installation 👍.
Why you need a 7.9kW or a 8kW solar system without battery storage?
In a solar system connected to the grid without battery storage, the solar panels generate electricity during the daytime. Any excessive electricity produced is usually sent back to the grid, and you receive credits or compensation 😊 for this excess energy through net metering or feed-in tariffs, which depend on your location and local regulations.
Advantages of installing a solar system without battery storage include:
- Lower Upfront Costs: Battery storage can significantly increase the upfront costs of a solar PV system. By opting for a system without batteries, you can reduce your initial investment. However, if you intend to opt a battery storage, take a look at the solar interest free battery loan.
- Simplicity: Without batteries, the system is simpler to install and maintain. There’s no need to worry about battery maintenance, replacement, or additional components.
- Grid Backup: Since your system is connected to the grid, you have access to electricity whenever your solar panels aren’t producing enough power, such as at night or during cloudy days.
- Potential for Financial Savings: Depending on your local regulations and utility policies, you may be eligible for net metering or other incentives that can help offset your electricity bills by selling excess electricity back to the grid 🙌.
Great opportunity to sell more energy to get more credits
Many regions offer net metering programs, allowing you to receive credits for excess electricity you send back to the grid. These credits can offset your electricity bills, potentially saving you money. The following screenshot illustrates the total accumulated savings on bills for Truganina, Victoria, Australia.

How on-grid solar system differs from off-grid
In a nutshell, there are two main types of inverters used in solar power systems: PV-only inverters and Hybrid inverters.
PV-only inverters, also called grid-tied inverters, are specifically designed for solar systems connected to the grid. Their main job is to convert the DC electricity produced by the solar panels into AC electricity that can be used in your home or sent back to the grid.
On the other hand, hybrid inverters are more versatile. They are designed to work not only with solar panels but also with other energy sources like batteries or backup generators. Hybrid inverters come with extra features such as battery charging capabilities and the ability to manage multiple energy sources. They are commonly used in off-grid systems or grid-tied systems with battery backup, allowing for energy storage and usage even when solar energy is not available, such as at night or during power outages.
To sum it up, 5kW PV only inverter (grid-connected) can handle up-to 6.6kW solar size while Hybrid inverter which battery ready (off grid) can handle up-to 10kW solar size. Both types of inverters are used in solar power systems, PV-only inverters focus solely on converting solar energy into usable electricity and feeding it into the grid. In contrast, hybrid inverters offer more flexibility by integrating with additional energy sources like batteries or generators.

Higher STC’s than 6.6kW or any smaller System Size
The number of STCs you receive for a solar installation depends on several factors, including the system’s capacity (in kilowatts), the geographical location of the installation, and the date of installation. Generally, larger solar systems with higher capacities will generate more STCs than smaller systems.
However, the relationship between system size and the number of STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) is not linear. Typically, there is a diminishing return as the system size increases. For instance, in Point Cook VIC, 3030, the Federal government provides STC’s AUD $2,370 for a 7.9kW/8kW system, whereas the STC’s is AUD $1,970 for a 6.6kW system in the same postcode 🤩.
